Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo's hopes of catching the current points leader Stoner, were dashed due to a lap-one crash involving Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini, leaving the Yamaha Factory Racing rider furious at Simoncelli's alleged failure to be conscious of "the risks there are in this category, with this bike and these tyres." The collision appearing to be due to over-exuberance with still cold tyres.
Stoner has 136 points after the Netherlands event, Lorenzo 108, and Dovizioso, 99. Valentino Rossi, with Ducati, is fourth on 81, ten points ahead of fellow Ducati rider, Nicky Hayden.
